2010 Annual Convention

The 2010 USRowing Annual Convention will take place December 2-4, 2010, at the Marriott Tampa Waterside   in Tampa, Fla.

Join us this year in sunny Tampa for a full slate of coaching educational opportunities for every level. We will have Level I, II, III and Advanced Coaching clinics, plus open sessions on Saturday where everyone can hear our national team coaches and other presenters, some of whom are listed below.

  • U.S. National Team coaches will be answering your questions, submitted by you before the convention, about training, technique, rigging and whatever topics you want to know more about.
  • Kristen Dieffenbach, Ph.D., CC AASP, Professor of Athletic Coaching Education, USA Cycling Coaching Education advisory board member and professional cycling coach will present on Overtraining/Under Recovery and on Talent Development.
  • Bo Hanson, four-time Australian Olympian and founder of Athleteassessments.com  will be talking about getting the most out of your athletes during training and race day and other topics.
  • Dr. Sergei Beliaev is the founder of Super Sports Systems and will present new scientifically based research about Periodization.
  • Guenter Beutter, Head Coach at GMS Rowing Center, has produced many national team athletes and will discuss the use of lactic acid testing to produce better results with pre-elite and elite level (junior, U23, and senior) athletes.
  • A USRowing Convention first! On-the-water coaching sessions will be available with Jim Dietz and Mark Wilson.
These presenters, plus many more, covering topics like collegiate club development, boat and oar repair, regatta management, coxing, and boathouse design will be lecturing Saturday during the open sessions, so if you are in Levels I, II or III, you won’t miss them.

Level I -- The Level I program is open to anyone interested in becoming a rowing coach. The program runs Thursday 2-6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Level II -- The Level II program is open to coaches who have had their Level I certificate  for more than six months or a coach who has over a year of coaching experience and understands safety, the basics of training, teaching, learning, basic physiology, and rigging as described in the Level I manual.  This program runs Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Level III -- The Level III program is open to coaches who have had their Level II for at least a year or a coach with five years of coaching experience.  This program runs Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Advanced Coaches program is open to all coaches; there are no pre-requisites, but it is geared to coaches who have experience coaching varsity (high school or college) or club athletes.  This program runs Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday's program is open to all attendees (as part of the Level I, II, III or Advanced registration fee) and is an opportunity to hear presenters starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. Sessions will include our national team coaches, plus topics covering proper erg technique, training, boat and oar repair, coaching your coxswain and many, many more. There will be more than one speaker presenting at any time, and you will be able to choose what interests you the most.

Junior Day is specifically for junior rowers and their parents (parents attend for free). Learn tips on how to become a better athlete from U.S. Junior National Team coaches, how to choose a college, meet the USRowing Athletes of the Year, and more. The price includes lunch for the junior. Parents may purchase lunch at the door.

This program runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Hotel Reservations -- Marriott Tampa Waterside has set up a special link to get you the USRowing Convention discount (you should see the “usrusra” code in the “group code” box for single and double occupancy and “usrusrb” for triple or quad occupancy).
