2009 Junior Women’s National Team Camps Overview

Sweep Selection Camp: June 22-July 5, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.

This invitation-only camp provides a development opportunity for high school girls who have birthdays in 1991 or later, have a 2K erg score of 7:20 or faster for 1991, 7:28 or faster for 1992 and 7:40 or faster for 1993 or younger and have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level. Invitations will begin being sent out in April.

This year the following teams will be selected from Sweep Selection Camp:

U.S. Junior National Team
The sweep selection camp will select Junior National Team athletes who will compete in 8+ and 4- at the 2009 World Junior Championships August 5-8 in France. The camp also will be sending a W2- to Junior World Championship Trials on June 24-26 in West Windsor, N.J.

High Performance Team
The High Performance Team will provide a development opportunity for athletes who have birthdays in 1992 or later that have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level. The goal of this opportunity is to prepare the “next fastest” 10 rowers and one coxswain from camp who are age eligible and provide them with international racing experience. They will train from July 10- 20 in Berlin, Germany, and have the opportunity to scrimmage with boats from the German Junior National Team. The coaches are Cassandra Cunningham (head coach) and Jeremy Turk.

CanAmMex Team
The CanAmMex regatta provides a development opportunity for 8 rowers and one coxswain who are age eligible. The focus will be on how to train, increasing their technical skill set and on learning how to prepare physically and mentally for international competition. They will represent the U.S. in the sweep events at CanAmMex July 11-19 in Mexico City, Mexico. Coaches are Corinna McGrath (head coach) and Sue Cohen.

Sculling Selection Camp: June 15-24, GMS Rowing Center, New Milford, Conn.

This invitation-only camp for the selection of the W4x provides a development opportunity for high school girls who have birthdays in 1991 or later and have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level. Invitations will begin being sent out in April.

The W4x selection will be in two phases. At the conclusion of Phase I of the selection camp, all athletes will race in the Junior World Championship Trials from June 24-26 in West Windsor, N.J. At the conclusion of the trials, the top eight athletes will continue their training with final selection and boat naming to occur by July 8.

The four athletes named to the U.S. Junior National Team in the W4x will compete August 5-8 at the 2009 World Junior Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.

The four remaining athletes will represent the U.S. in the sculling events July 11-19 at the CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico City, Mexico. The coaches will be Corinna McGrath (head coach) and Sue Cohen.

The invitations for this camp will be automatically made to the following:

  • Top two W1x from Scholastic Nationals
  • Top two W2x from Scholastic Nationals
  • Top two W1x from Stotesbury Cup Regatta
  • Top two W2x from Stotesbury Cup Regatta
  • Top three W1x from Youth Nationals
  • Top three W2x from Youth Nationals
  • Top two W4x from Youth Nationals

There also will be a number of at-large invitations issued at the discretion of the Head Coach.

Junior Women's Development Camp: June 22-July 12, Connecticut College, New London, Conn. 

This invitation-only camp provides an effective learning environment for high school athletes who have birthdays in 1993 or later, have a 2K erg score of 7:50 or faster and have demonstrated the ability and desire to potentially compete at a high level. Invitations will begin being sent out in April.

Junior B Sculling Camps (Updated 5/5)

These camps are designed to provide an effective regional learning environment for high school athletes who have birthdays in 1993, 1994 or 1995 and have demonstrated the desire to learn to scull. Applications should be submitted directly to each camp director.
