PRINCETON, N.J. – The 2006 National Team roster has been set, USRowing announced on Monday. In total, 26 crews will represent the United States at the 2006 FISA World Championships scheduled for August 20-27 in Eton, England.
The U.S. will have crews competing in the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s pair with coxswain, lightweight men’s pair, men’s four, women’s four, lightweight men’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight, women’s eight, and lightweight men’s eight. In addition, the U.S. will have crews racing in the adaptive men’s single sculls, adaptive women’s single sculls, adaptive double sculls, and adaptive four with coxswain.
The 85-person roster includes 53 past national team members. Thirty-eight athletes return from last year’s squad that competed at the 2005 FISA World Championships in Gifu, Japan. The U.S. won seven medals in Japan including gold in the men’s eight and the adaptive double sculls. Five members of that eight are back to defend their title, as is the three-time defending champion adaptive double of Angela Madsen and Scott Brown. Julie Nichols and Renee Hykel won silver in the lightweight women’s double sculls last year and will be looking for another podium finish this year, as will women’s single sculler Michelle Guerette, who won a bronze medal in Japan.
While the vast majority of the U.S. athletes will be focusing on one event, four women will be racing in two events in Eton. Anna Mickelson and Megan Cooke, who won gold in the pair at the world cup stop in Lucerne, Switzerland, in July, will race in that event as well as the eight, while Susan Francia and Brett Sickler will race in the double sculls and the eight.
