Competition
Due to unsafe conditions on the Merrimack River, including forecasted water flows and upcoming wind conditions, all racing scheduled for this weekend’s USRowing Northeast Youth Championships has been canceled. The flow rate on the 2,000-meter course is expected to remain between 17,000–21,000 cfs through Sunday, which is outside the safe window for racing. In addition, Sunday’s forecast calls for sustained winds around 10 mph with gusts reaching 17–18 mph, along with large amounts of debris on the course.
We want to extend our sincere thanks to all coaches and athletes for their flexibility and understanding throughout this process. Your commitment to athlete safety and well-being is deeply appreciated and fully aligned with our top priority at USRowing. We understand that qualification for the USRowing Youth National Championships is top of mind, and we remain committed to ensuring that the top four fastest crews in each event have the opportunity to compete at the 2025 Championships.
Please review the “USRowing Youth National Championships - Qualification Process Inclement Weather Policies” from the entry packet below: “Should a qualification regatta be canceled due to inclement weather, bids will be decided based on the official finishing order of the crews as determined by the regatta’s established practices and policies. Should a qualification regatta not have its own published weather policy, USRowing will award bids based on the results of the last completed round of the event. In instances where qualification events are canceled without completing any rounds, those crews will be required to submit a petition that includes results from the current season to demonstrate their placement within their district. These petitions will be given an expedited review, and the bids originally allotted for that regatta will be awarded based on the determinations of the committee.”USRowing and the Youth Nationals Coaches Council will be meeting in the coming days to organize a smooth and fair process for receiving petitions from Northeast coaches on behalf of their crews.
Additional communication regarding this process will be shared with the Northeast Region by Monday, May 19.
Thank you again for your understanding, partnership, and ongoing commitment to a safe and positive championship experience.
