Jett and Murphy Named 2024 USRowing Under 19 Athletes of the Year
USRowing is pleased to announce that Charlotte Jett (Greenbrae, Calif./Marin Rowing Association) has been named the 2024 USRowing Under 19 National Team Female Athlete of the Year, while Tyler Murphy (Windermere, Fla./Orlando Area Rowing Society) has been selected as this year's USRowing Under 19 National Team Male Athlete of the Year. Selected by the athletes and coaches of the team that competed at the 2024 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in St. Catharines, Canada, Jett and Murphy will be recognized on Attager Row at the Head of the Charles on Saturday, October 19 at 5 p.m.
A two-time Under 19 National Team member, Charlotte Jett sat six seat in the women's eight, which won gold in St. Catharines. Jett and her crew dominated their race, winning by open water. Last year, she raced in the women’s eight that finished just .10 seconds off the podium at the 2023 U19 World Championships in Paris, France.
Charlotte Jett said this about receiving the award, “I am so honored to be selected for the Under 19 Female Athlete of the Year. I have such deep admiration for all of the athletes I got to train alongside these past three summers. From being cut from the team in 2022 to winning a gold medal and being recognized by teammates in 2024 is so incredible. This past summer was an experience of a lifetime. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the USRowing staff, or my coach, Caitlin McClain.”
“To my teammates, I am so grateful for your relentless energy and positive attitude. The friendships I made this summer will be ones I cherish forever. I would like to thank my coach from back home, Sandy Armstrong, who pushed me to not only focus on my growth as an athlete but also as a person. To my parents, who have always offered me endless support. And to my two brothers, Will and Tommy, who have only helped foster a deeper love for this sport. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”
On the men's side, Tyler Murphy received the honor after two consecutive years on the U19 national team. He was the only athlete who returned from the 2023 men’s eight that did not qualify for the final in Paris at the 2023 U19 World Championships. This year, Murphy sat four seat in the men’s eight who fought ferociously against the crew from Great Britain to win silver in St. Catharines.
“I’m incredibly honored and humbled to be selected for the U19 athlete of the year,” said Tyler Murphy. “I’ve been very blessed to have spent my last two summers with the U19 national team, where I've made memories with friends for the rest of my life. Both of my summers brought me amazing experiences that have shaped me so much as a person. It meant a lot to get on the podium for the U.S. in Canada with thoughts of both crews from each summer in mind. The group of guys I was fortunate enough to row with in Canada was so well put together that we all got along better than anything I've ever experienced before. That kind of chemistry got to develop into some super tight friendships and a medal for the USA.”
“I truly owe my experiences and successes to the generosity and support of those around me. I was able to overcome some tough situations with overwhelming support from all of the awesome people at OARS and USRowing, especially my coaches; Nick Hall, Campbell Cole, Kirsten Anderson, Eric Gehrke and Brett Gorman who have helped me make things that seem impossible, possible. I also want to thank my Mom and siblings; Michael and Lily for my foundation and for the best family unit I could’ve ever asked for. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve gotten to see and do over the past two years with the help from others.”
The announcements for the Senior, U23, Para and Beach Sprint Athlete of the Year will be announced later this week.
