USRowing Awarded Team USA Coaching Education Support Grant
USRowing is pleased to announce that the organization has been awarded a Team USA Coaching Education Support Grant for National Governing Bodies. The $15,000 grant will help support USRowing's All-Coaches Scholarship program in 2023.
"We are extremely grateful to the USOPC for providing us this grant to help support our All-Coaches Scholarship program," said Brett Gorman, USRowing Director of Learning and Development. "This grant will allow us to provide scholarships to more people and expand the reach of our program."
USRowing has made increasing diversity in the sport a primary focus, including increasing access and reducing barriers to coaching education. The goal is to create an extremely accessible and standardized system of education that increases the safety and quality of coaching for rowing in the United States.
With that in mind, USRowing developed a scholarship program in 2020 for coaches who are underrepresented in the rowing community including Black, Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and individuals with disabilities. The scholarship fully covers tuition for both the Level 2 and Level 3 courses (Level 1 is a free course) and is available to any coach who belongs to an underrepresented community. In 2022, USRowing awarded 30 scholarships for Level 2, doubling the number from the previous year, and 10 for Level 3, totaling $15,350.
The USOPC grant will allow USRowing to increase the number of scholarships awarded, provide reduced cost or fully covered access to our annual coaches' convention, and reduce barriers to participating in continuing education such as in-person training including airfare and accommodations.
"It's critical that coaches have the resources, education, and network needed to support their athletes' development, keep their athletes safe, and advance in their careers," said Jennie Trayes, USRowing Chief Community Engagement Officer. "Thank you to the USOPC for recognizing the need of this program to break down barriers of entry into coaching and for supporting our inclusion efforts."
The ADM and Coaching Education Grants program is a collaborative between United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee's Coaching and NGB Services departments, intended to provide select NGBs and HPMOs with funding support in order to advance projects in the ADM and/or coach education space.
