Madigan Advances to Semifinals at the U19 World Championships

The 2025 World Rowing U19 Championships got underway today in Trakai, Lithuania, with the United States fielding crews in the spare pairs and the men’s single sculls. Representing the U.S. in the single was Potomac Boat Club’s Tony Madigan, who delivered a strong performance in his debut race on the international stage.

Madigan placed third in his heat in the men’s single sculls after a tightly contested race that proved to be one of the most competitive of the day. He took an early lead through the first 500 meters and maintained a narrow edge over Norway’s Raphael Arkadiusz Pintsch for much of the race. As the two battled down the course, it was Hungary’s sculler who launched a late sprint in the final 250 meters to overtake both, edging out Madigan and Pintsch in a dramatic finish.

Despite finishing third, Madigan’s effort was one of the most impressive of the opening day, his time ranked fourth overall across all heats. It was a strong international debut for the first-time U.S. national team member.

Madigan’s appearance in Trakai follows a standout domestic season. The rising senior at Wakefield High School claimed victory in the men’s single sculls at the 2025 Youth National Championships and earned his place on the U.S. squad with a commanding performance at the U19 Trials earlier this summer. His composure, race strategy, and speed continue to mark him as a rising talent to watch as the regatta progresses.

Tomorrow, the women’s and men’s four, quadruple sculls and eight race with the women’s four racing at 4:20 a.m ET. All races can be tracked live, and video streaming will be available on Overnght. A detailed racing schedule can be found here.
