Personal
Bernie is an avid surfer, inept mechanic, and capable engineer. He loves to make paper airplanes and enjoys all chocolate. He is terrified of lightning. Bernie walked-on to the SDSU club team in 2011. He lists Robert Aparicio as his personal hero because he taught Bernie lessons on sacrifice, perception, and self-determination that have carried him far. He dreams of being one of those guys who stands on the beach, staring mindlessly out into the flat sunset, slurring each word, and telling forlorn surfers "should have been here yesterday brah - the waves were FIRIN." His favorite places to compete are wherever the hungry athletes are and anytime, anywhere against Josh Remland. He enjoys visiting any of the U.S. National Parks. He lists his favorite Olympic moment as Mahe Drysdale's epic final in Rio in 2016. His favorite book is Parallel Lives and his favorite musical artists are The Home Team, Tigercub, POORSTACY. His favorite speech is Beware the Military Industrial Complex, and his favorite quote is, "Anyone can build a bridge, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands."
