FAQs
Do the boat handlers need to be of different genders?
No – both boat handlers for a race entry can be of any gender for the 2025 USRowing Youth Beach Sprint National Championships.
Are composite boats allowed?
Yes – crews may be comprised of athletes from different clubs, and athletes may also race unaffiliated.
What are the costs of the oar rentals provided on-site during the days of the event?
Oar rentals will be available for $75/day from our vendor Croker Oars. Contact Greg Doyle greg@crokerusa.com to arrange a rental.
What Requirements are there for Boat Handlers?
Boat Handlers are considered Support Staff with access to the athlete/participant area. Because of this, Support Staff must be entered in RegattaCentral under the ‘Coach & Support Staff’ tab. Support Staff must have the following to be compliant:
- Current Membership (for the full duration of the regatta)
- Signed Membership Agreement & Waiver
- SafeSport Self-Attestation/Current SafeSport Training (valid for the full duration of the regatta).
What should athletes wear for racing?
We recommend that athletes wear their usual rowing unisuits as they would for classic rowing competitions. Some athletes prefer to wear sun shirts for extra protection. Sunglasses and water shoes are highly recommended.
Will there be water and food available for purchase on-site?
There will be access to water on-site. Athletes are recommended to bring their own food, however there may be a food vendor on site.
What ages are eligible to compete?
Athletes must meet the “Youth” definition to be eligible to race at the 2025 USRowing Youth Beach Sprint National Championships. The definition of “Youth” can be found in the event entry packet.
What type of boats are we using?
Our regatta will use racing shells manufactured by Lite Boats, provided by USRowing. Participating athletes do not need to bring any shells when racing at the 2025 USRowing Beach Sprint National Championships.
Are boat handlers responsible for navigating boats around the slalom?
Yes – Boat handlers play an imperative role for racing crews to steer around the course buoys during competition. The hand signals will be taught during Monday’s orientation and the coach's practical.
What is the registration process for boat handlers?
Boat handlers are registered in RegattaCentral by clicking on ‘Coaches and Support Staff’ listed under Registration in the left-hand menu. They are considered support staff for the regatta and should be listed here to receive credentials. Note, only the RegattaCentral account that made the event entry will be able to submit the boat handler as Support Staff.
What is the penalty if you miss a buoy?
We will be adopting the same rules of racing in terms of time penalty for missing turn buoys consistent with the World Rowing’s rules in section d(i-ii), “A crew not correctly rounding any buoy on the course shall be awarded a sanction of a time penalty as follows: (i.) Not correctly rounding the first or second buoy from the beach – 30 seconds each instance; (ii.) Not correctly rounding the third buoy from the beach – 120 seconds.”
Can I adjust the rigging of the boat prior to using it?
No – Rigging may not be adjusted to any of the boat’s hardware and is kept standardized. In the boat, the only elements that may be adjusted are the oars and foot stretcher position (tracks, not angles).
