Impactful Year for STEM to Stern
What an incredible and impactful year STEM to Stern has had! Congratulations to STEM to Stern partner clubs who have opened up rowing to more than 200 student-athletes around the country.
STEM to Stern is designed to address barriers to make middle school rowing more accessible. The goal of the program is to create a more diverse pipeline of athletes into competitive high school rowing and to support student-athletes through high school, into college, and beyond. As the program becomes more established at rowing clubs, junior rowing is changing, becoming more diverse, competitive, accessible, and inclusive.
This year, STEM to Stern was awarded with the DEI Choice Award by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee as the top diversity, equity, and inclusion effort across all of USA sports. Background:
STEM to Stern was started at the Milwaukee Rowing Club, in partnership with the Milwaukee School of Engineering, to make rowing and STEM education possible for student-athletes in the Milwaukee area. Since then, the program has spread to 25 partner clubs.
Each club runs a unique program, serving unique needs, and making the program their own. The STEM to Stern model is made up of 10 components that address major barriers including transportation and swimming. The STEM to Stern team supports clubs as they build relationships with community organizations and schools and helps clubs work through the challenges of establishing a new program. Through the tireless efforts of program leads and facilitators around the country, STEM to Stern participants have access to incredible rowing and STEM opportunities and the sport becomes more accessible and relevant to a much wider audience.
