Level 2 Coaching Certification


Course Description


Level 2 is a "blended" course with an online component that will take 15-20 hours to complete before the live portion that is comprised of 10 hours of instruction. Currently, the live instruction is offered over Zoom with instructors and facilitators to oversee small group work. The instructors will address the topics outlined in our Level 2 manual with a  focus on the practical application of the knowledge and concepts obtained through the online component of the course. 

  • Course Cost: $280
    • Cost includes access to online learning materials and digital L2 manual as well as the cost of domestic NCSI Background Check
    • Coaches that qualify may apply for the United We Row Coaches Scholarship which covers the cost of tuition for L2. 

 

  • Online Learning Platform
    • The online component is a series of modules through our online learning platform that participants gain access to upon completing the registration and payment process.
    • The live Zoom sessions consist of 10 hours total of instructor lectures and small group work
    • All live Zoom sessions are mandatory to complete the Level 2 certification so please be select a course that fits your schedule.


Level 2 Certification Requirements

These are additional requirements, not prerequisites. They can be completed before or after the course. All requirements must be current in order to be a Level 2 coach in good standing and can be submitted on your coach profile in the member portal here.   • Adult CPR
  • First Aid Certification
  • Boating License or Safety Certification
  • NCSI Background Check
  • SafeSport 
  • Mentor hours (20 hours for Level 2)

Registration for Level 2 Courses

  • Registration for coaching development courses can now be done through the Member Portal. If you do experience any issues, or just need help accessing your Member profile, contact Learning & Development Coordinator, Flávia de Luccas, at flavia.deluccas@usrowing.org
  • Registration closes one week before the course start date to ensure that participants have enough time to complete the live course prework.

Follow the steps below to register for the Level 2: Foundation Level Coach course:

  1. Log in to your Member Profile
    NOTE: If you do not have an active Championship membership, you will need to renew or upgrade before you can register for Level 2.
  2. Click the Course Listings button in the footer of your Member profile
  3. Select Level 2: Foundation Level Course you wish to attend from the dropdown
  4. Click Pay
  5. Select the desired payment method to complete registration.
  6. Follow the instructions on the confirmation page to get started with the online portion of the Level 2: Foundation Level Coach course on the Thinkific learning platform. 

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Level 2 Coach Certification cost?

Level 2 certification costs $280.00 and includes a USOPC compliant background check.

What are the requirements and prerequisites to become a certified Level 2 coach?

Prerequisites: Candidates for Level 2 must be at least 18 years old with 4 years of rowing/coxing experience and approximately 1 year of coaching experience or previously completed the Level 1 Coach Certification. Candidates must also hold Championship membership to register for the course.

Certification: Candidates must complete the Level 2 course, attend the live virtual sessions (10 hours), and submit all supplemental requirements: 

  • SafeSport training
  • Pass NCSI Background Check
  • First Aid training
  • CPR/AED training
  • Boater Safety License
  • 20 Mentor Hours (to be replaced with Continuing Education Credits beginning January 1, 2025)
I'm a Member Organization. What happens if I don't have a Level 2 certified coach by January 1, 2026?

A Level 2 certified coach is required to register for and attend hosted and sanctioned regattas in 2026. An organization that continues to operate without a Level 2 certified coach faces the possibility of suspension, disqualification, or other penalties. 

Are all Member Organizations required to have a Level 2 Certified Coach?

No, Regatta Pass and Local Organizing Committee members do not require a Level 2 certified coach. All Standard, PLUS, Open Doors, and Sub-Org member organizations do require at least one Level 2 certified coach.
