2022 USRowing Indoor Nationals Draws More Than 1,000 Competitors


More than 1,000 competitors from 250-plus clubs raced Sunday at the 2022 USRowing Indoor National Championships/C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships, with medals being awarded in more than 70 events.

Over 400 junior rowers jumped on an erg to compete in the under 19, under 17, and under 15 categories.

In the closest race of the day, Northfield Mount Hermon School's Elle Wheeler and Oak Neck Rowing Academy's Brooke Seebeck recorded identical times of 7:12.2, taking home dual gold medals in the women's U19 event. Port Rowing's Reilly Katz finished third, just 0.2 seconds back in a 7:12.4, with St. Mary Academy - Bay View's Lindsey Williams finishing fourth in a 7:12.9.

In the men's U19 event, Burton Beach Rowing Club's Davis Kelly won by just over one second, clocking a 6:16.6 to take home the gold medal. Ethan Dunn finished second in a 6:17.8, with Bedford Crew Club's Matthew Marks taking third, just 0.1 seconds behind Dunn.

In the U15 women's race, Capital City Rowing's Harleigh Derrickson recorded a time of 7:54.5, finishing more than 14 seconds ahead of Lake Oswego Community Rowing's Freya Little. Rockland Rowing's Janelli Garcia finished third. In the men's U15 race, Ukrainian Yaroslav Zakharov, from Burevisnyk Rowing Club, recorded the fastest time, finishing in a 6:40.2. Marin Rowing Association's Dominic Puccinelli finished second in a 6:58.3, with Burton Beach Rowing Club's Zack Merrigan finishing third. Zakharov finished second in the event last year behind Elijah Harrison.

Harrison moved up to the U17 race this year, but it was Phillips Exeter Academy's Rohan Radhakeesoon who came out on top of the race in a 6:19.8. Greenwich Crew's Marcus Chung and Canal Dock Boathouse's Theodore Herzog finished second with identical times of 6:23.1. Harrison clocked a 6:39.1 to finish fourth. In the women's U17 race, Niskayuna Rowing's Rebecca Schmidt defeated Triangle Rowing Club's Annelise Hahl by 0.1 seconds, finishing with a time of 7:25.9. Advanced Community Rowing Association's Maya Geller finished third in a 7:31.6.

Isaiah Harrison, Elijah's older brother and the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships bronze medalist in the single sculls, repeated as the men's open champion, clocking a 5:53.2 to best Seth Chatterton by more than 30 seconds. Lake Leelanau Rowing Club's Andriy Pryveda finished third. Long Beach Rowing Association's Maddy Focht won the women's open event in a 6:58.5, finishing more than six seconds ahead of Greenwich Crew's Kelsey Barolak.

Jane Leff won the U23 women's open event, clocking a 7:28.4 to defeat Treasure Coast Rowing Club's Greta Geisser by 0.2 seconds. In the men's U23 event, Burevisnyk Rowing Club Artem Zakharov clocked a 6:03.9 to win the gold medal ahead of Alabama Crew's Maxwell Wahoff.

A large masters field saw athletes competing from the AA category (ages 21-26) to well into their 90s.

In the men's masters B category, Potomac Boat Club's Paul Marcy repeated as champion, winning the race in a 6:04.5. Marcy finished just under three seconds ahead of Kyle Larson, with Will Emerson finishing third. Australia's Vivian Culverwell won the women's masters B category in a 7:01.1. Culverwell finished 7.5 seconds ahead of Elizabeth Gilmore. Morgan McGrath finished third.

Shirley Fargen, 84, won the women's masters K category in a 10:32.2, while 82-year-old Isako Egawa won the women's masters J category in a 9:36.7. Vesper Boat Club's Barbara Hogan, 76, won another hammer in the women's masters I category in a 9:13.6.

With six racers in the men's masters K category, Lake Casitas Rowing Association's Don Tanhauser, 87, repeated as champion, winning the gold medal in a 9:13.6. Tanhauser won his eighth hammer. George Demeritt, 86, took the silver medal in a 9:48.0, while Rocky Mountain Rowing Club's Dean Smith, the championships' oldest competitor at 95, took third in a 10:11.7.

Potomac Boat Club's Michael McGuirk won the men's masters J category in a 7:33.2, while RIC Amsterdam's Frans van Mierlo won the men's masters I category in a 7:14.3.

Medals were contested in 28 different para rowing categories.

Portland Boat Club's Todd Vogt, a member of the 2019 World Championships' squad, won the men's open PR3 race in a 6:31.4, while Three Rivers Rowing Association's Erin Kavanagh repeated as champion in the PR3 women's open race. Miami Beach Watersports Center/Miami Beach Rowing Club's Patrick Ward won the men's open PR2 race in a 9:00.9.

In the largest para race of the day, Athletes Without Limits' Wesley Pincince won the men's PR3 (PI) race by seven seconds, finishing with a time of 7:40.5.
