2022 USRowing Summer National Championships Begin Wednesday

National championships in 50 events and world championship roster spots in 10 events will be up for grabs July 6-8 at the 2022 USRowing Summer National Championships.

With the size of the USRowing Summer National Championship Regatta continuing to grow, USRowing made the decision to split the summer championships into two regattas in 2022. The first of those events gets underway Wednesday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

The USRowing Summer National Championships will feature racing in 50 boat classes in the U23 and open categories, with 351 boats and nearly 500 rowers scheduled to race. The men's under 23 single sculls leads the way in total entries with 25 scullers scheduled to compete, followed closely by the men's single sculls (23 entries) and women's single sculls (22 entries). Mendota Development Camp is bringing the most crews, with 25 boats scheduled to compete. Greenwich Crew is bringing 24 boats, while Vesper Boat Club is brining 22.

In addition to national titles, spots on the 2022 Senior National Team will be up for grabs in 10 events, with the winners of those trials' events earning spots on the 2022 World Championships squad that will race this September in Racice, Czech Republic. These events include the lightweight women's single sculls, lightweight men's single sculls, lightweight women's pair, lightweight men's pair, lightweight women's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's quadruple sculls, PR1 men's single sculls, PR2 women's single sculls, PR2 men's single sculls, and PR3 mixed double sculls.

Cambridge Boat Club's Mary Jones Nabel, who won gold in the lightweight women's single sculls at the first two World Rowing Cup regattas earlier this year, will be looking to secure her spot on the 2022 team this week. In addition to Jones Nabel, the 11-boat field includes University of Virginia Women's Rowing's Isabella Begley, who will represent the U.S. in the lightweight single sculls at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, as well as Liz Hinley, who was a member of the 2021 U.S. Beach Sprint National Team. Whitemarsh Boat Club's Sophia Luwis, who finished second in the lightweight single sculls at the speed order in March and second in the open weight double sculls at the second national selection regatta in May, also is scheduled to race.

The lightweight men's single sculls event has several past U.S. National Team members entered in the field of 16 including 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships' gold medalist Sam Melvin from New York Athletic Club. Texas Rowing Center's James McCullough, a member of the 2019 Pan American Games team, raced the event at the 2022 World Rowing Cup II regatta in Poznan, Poland, earlier this month, while Riverside Boat Club's Alex Twist, Upper Thames Rowing Club's Tom Foster, and Hugh McAdam all have national team experience.

Three boats have entered the lightweight women's pair including Ava Sack and Elsa Andrews, who will be racing in the event at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Vesper Boat Club's Elaine Tierney and Solveig Imsdahl both have national team experience, with Tierney racing at last year's under 23 worlds and Imsdahl being part of two under 23 teams and the 2019 Pan American Games squad. Riverside Boat Club's Chloe Lewis and Keara Twist round out the field. Twist also raced at the 2019 Pan American Games.

Three crews have entered the lightweight men's quadruple sculls. The Conshohocken Rowing Center crew of Simon Dubiel, Eli Rabinowitz, Justin Schmidt, and Troy Riesenberger will be racing the event at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, having won those trials a couple of weeks ago in Sarasota. Riverside Boat Club and Undine Barge Club also have entries in the event.

The lightweight men's pair also has three entries, one each from New York Athletic Club, Riverfront Recapture, and Vesper Boat Club.

In the PR3 mixed double sculls, Portland Boat Club's Todd Vogt and Pearl Outlaw dominated their competition at the 2022 Gavirate International Para Rowing Regatta in May. The duo won the national selection regatta earlier this year and is racing uncontested in order to secure a spot on this year's world championships' squad.

Lake Casitas Rowing Association's Russell Gernaat, who finished eighth in the PR2 mixed double sculls at last summer's Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, is racing uncontested in the PR2 men's single sculls. Gernaat is a three-time national team member.

The lightweight women's quadruple sculls event has just one entry. The Riverside/Whitemarsh composite boat of Sophia Luwis, Elizabeth Martin, Cara Stawicki, and Audrianna Boersen will race uncontested. Stawicki is a two-time national team member and a 2019 world champion in the lightweight women's pair. Boersen finished second with Luwis in the open double sculls at the second 2022 National Selection Regatta and was third behind Molly Reckford and Luwis in the lightweight single sculls at the speed order in March.

West Side Rowing Club's Andrew Mangan, who is trying to make his first national team, will be racing uncontested in the PR1 men's single sculls. Likewise, Community Rowing's Jennifer Fitz-Roy is racing uncontested in the PR2 women's single sculls and is looking to make her first national team.

The trials' events are not the only ones to feature past national team members. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Cicely Madden is entered in the women's single sculls, while world champions and multiple-time national team members Vicky Opitz and Molly Bruggeman are entered in the women's four. Kevin Meador, a two-time national team member in the men's single sculls, will be racing in that event.

Racing gets underway on Wednesday with time trials in events with more than six entries. Thursday will feature semifinals in events with more than 12 entries, and finals in 33 events. Finals in the remaining events, including all trials' events, will take place on Friday. Click here for a complete list of entries. The most up-to-date schedule, heat sheets, and results will be available on HereNow.com. Semifinals and finals will be streamed live on USRowing's YouTube channel.

The second summer national championship, the USRowing Youth Summer National Championships, will be held July 15-17 on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and will feature racing in 35 events in the youth, U17, and U16 categories.

While the two regattas will take place separately, clubs will still be able to race for the combined all-points trophies across both regattas. The Colgan Cup Overall Team Points Trophy, Sulgar-Barnes Men's Points Trophy, and Marion D. Ventura Women's Points Trophy will be up for grabs, with opportunities to score points at both events. Separate points trophies also will be given at the individual regattas.
