Celebrating Black History Month: Meet Lia Simmons
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Lia Simmons. I am a rower and sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania.
What is your favorite quote, and why?
"Minimize the gap between your dreams and reality."
ā Arshay Cooper
To me, this quote motivates me every day to keep working towards my aspirations in everything I do.
What impact has rowing made on your life?
Rowing has played a huge role in my life. I've been rowing since the sixth grade, and it has opened the door to endless possibilities, from the ability to attend an Ivy League institution to being able to travel to England to race at the Henley Royal Regatta.
What is the essence of you?
I pride myself on being hardworking and goal-driven, as well as being a very welcoming and empathetic human being.
How, if at all, does your identity play a role in shaping who you are and who you will continue to become?
My different identities play a huge role in shaping who I am; they are the foundation for every decision I make. I hope to continue to make the right decisions, the ones that ultimately led me to be able to row at the Division 1 level, and that they carry over into the next chapter of my life, whatever that may be.
What is something about you or your culture you wish more people understood?
I wish more people understood the bravery it takes for people of color to participate in the sport of rowing.
The theme for Black History Month 2024 is African Americans and the Arts. How do you feel rowing exists as an art form?
While rowing itself may not be traditionally recognized as an art form, the experiences, emotions, and cultural significance associated with it can certainly inspire artistic expression. It can be explored as a symbol of resilience, teamwork, and determination. Artists may use rowing as a medium to represent broader themes related to African American history and the ongoing pursuit of equality and representation.
