Eight U.S. National Boats Headed to Henley

Coming off a seven-medal performance at World Rowing Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland, USRowing will have eight national boats racing this week at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames, England.

While small boats were the focus in Poznan, many of the athletes will be mixing into larger boats this week at Henley. USRowing's contingent will include a men's eight, women's eight, men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, women's double sculls, men's single sculls, women's single sculls, and men's double sculls.

After laying down a dominant performance in winning the lightweight women's double sculls in Poland, Tokyo 2020 Olympians Michelle Sechser (Folsom, Calif./University of Tulsa/Cambridge Boat Club) and Molly Reckford (Short Hills, N.J./Dartmouth College/Sarasota Crew) will race against open weight double sculls for the Stonor Challenge Trophy.

Ben Davison (Inverness, Fla./University of Washington/California Rowing Club) took home a bronze medal in the men's single from Poznan and now will race in the Diamond Sculls Challenge at Henley. A Tokyo 2020 Olympian in the men's eight, Davison is no stranger to the single, having raced it at multiple World Rowing Junior and Under 23 Championships.

After winning bronze in Poznan in the women's double sculls, two-time Olympian Kara Kohler (Clayton, Calif./University of California, Berkeley/Texas Rowing Center) will be back in the single at Henley, racing in the Princess Royal Challenge Cup. Kohler won a bronze medal in the single at the 2019 World Rowing Championships and raced the event last year in Tokyo.

Fresh off a fifth-place finish in the lightweight men's double sculls in Poznan, Zachary Heese (Pelham, N.Y./University of Virginia/Texas Rowing Center) and Jasper Liu (Phoenix, Ariz./University of Pennsylvania/Texas Rowing Center) will race against the open weights in the Double Sculls Challenge Cup.

Racing in the Grand Challenge Cup, the men's eight will be a combination of the four and the two pairs that raced in Poznan. The three crews came home with two bronze medals from Poland, one in the pair and one in the four. The boat includes two Olympians. Likewise, the women's eight slated to race the Remenham Challenge Cup will be made up of the four and two pairs from Poznan. The top U.S. women's pair brought home a silver medal from Poland, while the other two boats finished fourth. The Henley eight includes six Olympians.

In the Queen Mother Challenge Cup, the men's quadruple sculls will consist of the two double sculls crews that raced in the B final in Poznan. The women's quadruple sculls crew, which will race in the Princess Grace Challenge Cup, includes the remaining athletes from the two doubles, including Sophia Vitas (Franklin, Wis./University of Wisconsin/Texas Rowing Center) who won a bronze medal with Kohler, as well as women's single sculler Margaret Fellows (Warwick, Mass./St. Lawrence University/Cambridge Boat Club), from Poznan.

The U.S. won seven medals at the world cup event in Poland. The lightweight women's double sculls and lightweight women's single sculls won gold, the women's pair won silver, and the men's pair, women's double sculls, men's four, and men's single sculls won bronze. Four additional crews made the finals.

In addition to the USRowing national boats, many other crews based in the United States from junior, collegiate, and club programs also will be racing at Henley. Racing begins on Tuesday with heats. Preliminary rounds continue through Friday, with semifinals taking place on Saturday and finals taking place on Sunday. The regatta features more than 300 head-to-head races in categories ranging from junior to open.

Event coverage will be available on the Henley Royal Regatta website and on USRowing.org. Results will be available on the Henley website and live streaming will be available on the Henley Royal Regatta YouTube Channel. Click here for the complete draw.
