Entries Set at Final Qualification Regatta as Eight U.S. Boats Look to Qualify for Paris

While 10 U.S. crews have already qualified for the upcoming 2024 Olympic or Paralympic Games, eight more boats will get their opportunity to secure spots in Paris at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic & Paralympic Qualification Regatta May 19-21 in Lucerne, Switzerland.  

The men's single sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls, men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, and men's eight will be looking to earn their spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, each needing a top-two finish in Lucerne to qualify. The PR1 men's single sculls and PR2 mixed double sculls will be trying to earn spots in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The top two PR2 mixed doubles will qualify for Paris, while only the winning PR1 men's single will move on. 

With entries now closed, nearly 400 athletes from over 50 nations are scheduled to compete in the regatta. 

In the men's single sculls, Jacob Plihal (Vashon Island, Wash./Northeastern University/Craftsbury Green Racing Project), who won a silver medal in the event at the 2023 Pan American Games, is one of 31 scullers entered in the race. Plihal earned his spot in the qualification regatta by winning the single at the 2024 U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Team Trials – Rowing in early April in Sarasota, Fla. Plihal is looking to make his first Olympic Games. 

Ben Davison (Inverness, Fla./University of Washington/California Rowing Club) and Sorin Koszyk (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Cornell University/California Rowing Club) easily won the men's double sculls at the Olympic trials in April to move on to Lucerne. Davison, who raced in the men's eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and Koszyk, who raced at the qualification regatta in the men's quadruple sculls in 2021, are part of a 14-boat field.  

In the lightweight men's double sculls, Sam Melvin (Huntington Beach, Calif./Columbia University/New York Athletic Club) and Cooper Tuckerman (Bozeman, Mont./Dartmouth College/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) won Olympic trials by nearly four seconds over the crew that represented the U.S. at last year's world championships. Melvin raced the lightweight men's single sculls at last year's worlds, while Tuckerman has represented the U.S. at the under 19 and under 23 levels internationally. Both are looking to make their first Olympic team. The duo is part of a 12-boat field in Lucerne. 

In the men's quadruple sculls, Dominique Williams (Madison, Conn./University of Pennsylvania/Penn AC), Will Legenzowski (Vista, N.Y./Brown University/California Rowing Club), Liam Galloway (Ridgefield, Conn./Yale University/New York Athletic Club), and Kevin Cardno (Huntsville, Ala./University of Alabama, Huntsville/Texas Rowing Center) narrowly won at the Olympic trials to earn their trip to Lucerne. The boat raced together at last year's world championships, finishing ninth. The U.S. is one of 10 crews entered in the event. All four rowers are trying to make their first Olympic team. 

In the women's quadruple sculls, Lauren O'Connor (Belleville, Wis./University of Wisconsin/ARION), Teal Cohen (Dallas, Texas/ University of Washington/USRowing Training Center – Princeton), Emily Delleman (Davenport, Iowa/Stanford University/Craftsbury Green Racing Project), and Grace Joyce (Northfield, Ill./University of Wisconsin/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) had no trouble winning at trials and will take on five other crews in Lucerne. O'Connor and Joyce were part of the quad at last year's world championships, while Delleman was part of the quad in 2022. Cohen raced in the women's four at the 2022 World Rowing Championships. All four are looking to make their first Olympic team. 

The U.S. men's eight will take on three other boats in Lucerne. The crew was named through a camp selection process, which concluded in late March. The U.S. boat will be made up of Clark Dean (Sarasota, Fla./Harvard University/Boston Rowing Federation), Chris Carlson (Bedford, N.H./University of Washington/New York Athletic Club), Peter Chatain (Winnetka, Ill./Stanford University/California Rowing Club), Henry Hollingsworth (Dover, Mass./Brown University/California Rowing Club), Rielly Milne (Woodinville, Wash./University of Washington/California Rowing Club), Nick Rusher (West Bend, Wis./Yale University/California Rowing Club), Evan Olson (Bothell, Wash./University of Washington/Seattle Scullers/Penn AC), Pieter Quinton (Portland, Ore./Harvard University/California Rowing Club), and Christian Tabash (Alexandria, Va./Harvard University/University of California, Berkeley/USRowing Training Center – Sarasota). Dean will be looking to make his second Olympic team, having finished fifth in the men's four in Tokyo, while the other members of the crew are looking to make their first Olympic team. 

In the PR1 men's single sculls, Andrew Mangan (Buffalo, N.Y./Stanford University/Texas Rowing Center/West Side Rowing Club) will take on eight other scullers. Mangan finished 14th in the event at last year's world championships and will race at the qualification regatta for a chance to qualify for his first Paralympic Games.  

In the PR2 mixed double sculls, Russell Gernaat (Grand Rapids, Mich./Lake Casitas Rowing Club) and Madison Eberhard (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius University/ West Side Rowing Club) will take on seven other crews. The duo finished 11th at last year's world championships. Gernaat is a Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, while Eberhard is looking to make her first Paralympic Games.

Rowing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place July 27-August 4. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are scheduled from August 28 to September 8, with Para rowing events beginning August 30.
