United We Row

Meet Our Unity Partner: RISE

What is the mission of your organization?

RISE is a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice, and improve race relations. Through our programs, we use the unifying power of sport to equip athletes, coaches, and administrators with the tools to be leaders in driving meaningful change in their teams, communities, and society.

What kind of resources does RISE provide?

RISE provides a variety of educational resources, including interactive workshops, leadership programs, curriculum on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and digital tools designed to foster dialogue and action. We work with athletes, coaches, and organizations to deliver tailored programming that promotes racial equity, builds cultural competency, and empowers individuals to create inclusive environments.

Why is sport such a powerful instrument for social change?

Sport has the unique ability to unite people across different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It provides a common ground where individuals can build relationships, learn from one another, and challenge biases. Because of its visibility and influence, sport can drive conversations on social issues, inspire action, and develop leaders who champion equity and inclusion both on and off the field.

What education do you provide to athletes, coaches, and administrators, and why is it important to learn?

RISE educates athletes, coaches, and administrators on key topics such as identity, bias, privilege, cultural competency, and activism. Our programs use experiential learning and sports-based activities to deepen understanding and foster meaningful conversations. This education is crucial because it equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to create inclusive teams, challenge discrimination, and use their platforms to advocate for social justice.

What are some ways the rowing community can improve inclusion and belonging in our sport?

The rowing community can improve inclusion and belonging by actively recruiting and supporting diverse athletes, providing accessible pathways to participation, and fostering an environment where all individuals feel valued and respected. This includes investing in DEI education, amplifying underrepresented voices, and ensuring that leadership, coaching staff, and decision-makers reflect the diversity of the broader community. Partnerships with organizations focused on increasing access to rowing can also help break down barriers and make the sport more inclusive.

What message would you like to send to rowers and coaches reading this?

Rowing, like all sports, has the power to build bridges and bring people together. As rowers and coaches, you have the opportunity to create a culture of inclusivity, respect, and unity. Commit to learning, listening, and leading by example. Use your voice and influence to challenge inequities and make rowing a sport where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Together, we can continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible—on and off the water.
