Team USA

Mike Teti to Depart USRowing

October 15, 2021 (New York, N.Y.) - USRowing announced today updates on its high-performance plan in the build-up to the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Starting in 2022, USRowing will consolidate the men's and women's national team training groups to one High Performance Center in Princeton, N.J., with a smaller number of full-time athletes at the center. These numbers will encompass both men's and women's sweep rowing and sculling. Final determination on coaches at the performance center will be made by the new head of high performance.

USRowing will focus on creating collaborative pathways for athletes to find the best training environment possible. USRowing High Performance Partner Clubs will be key pieces in the mission to train, support and develop the elite-athlete talent pool that will represent the United States. These clubs will place an emphasis on training athletes in small boats for selection and the preparation of athletes for U.S. National Team trials and selection camps.

As part of these changes, Mike Teti will move from his position as USRowing's Men's National Team Coach to the head coach of California Rowing Club, a USRowing High Performance Partner Club. Under the leadership of CRC Board member Andy Rogers, California Rowing Club also will provide financial and wellness assistance to its athletes in accordance with and as facilitated by the new USRowing high performance plan and guidelines. This transition will take effect November 1, 2021.

USRowing thanks Mike for his dedication to the organization and to its athletes over the past four years, in his most recent appointment as men's national ream coach. Teti has a long and successful track record in international rowing. Teti's crews have won 24 medals at the world championships and Olympic Games, highlighted by back-to-back gold medals on three separate world championships and a world-record performance at the Athens Olympics in 2004 in the men's eight.

Teti and his staff brought important experience to this group in 2017, and under his leadership, many promising young athletes have entered the elite pipeline and gained valuable experience for Paris in 2024. Teti and Rogers worked hard to support athletes in Oakland with jobs and local connections to complement their training and are looking forward to continuing to do so in the new high performance club format.

Since the completion of the Olympic Games in Tokyo three months ago, USRowing has rigorously examined every aspect of its high-performance program and is excited to move forward with a fresh approach and an eye on success in Paris in 2024 and beyond. To meet these goals, USRowing is focusing its work on elite athlete identification, development and retention.

USRowing will host informational Zoom sessions for national team athletes and high performance clubs, the first one to take place on Wednesday, October 20, at 7 p.m. EDT. More information and invitations to be shared through email.
