Racing Postponed Until Monday at World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals
Racing at the 2023 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals in Barletta, Italy, was postponed on Sunday afternoon before the B final of the under 19 women's double sculls due to the water conditions.
Racing will resume Monday at 7:20 a.m. local time with the remaining races in the U19 women's double, followed by racing in the under 19 mixed double sculls, open men's solo, and open women's solo events.
The U.S. did have four crews race before racing was stopped.
In the under 19 women's double sculls, Annelise Hahl (Cary, N.C./Needham Broughton High School/Triangle Rowing Club/Next Level Rowing) and Annalie Duncomb (Mason, Ohio/William Mason High School/Great Miami Rowing) got knocked out in the quarterfinals after colliding with the Italian crew. With the water conditions becoming more challenging by the minute, the duo was leading coming into the final 100 meters but got sideways with the ever-increasing waves, pushing them into the Italian crew. While the U.S. recovered to cross the finish line first, they were excluded and did not advance.
Earlier in the day, Malachi Anderson (Hamilton, Ohio/Sinclair Community College/Great Miami Rowing/Next Level Rowing) and Britt Wotovich (Redington Beach, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory School/Palm River Training Center) opened the morning with a victory over Japan in the Last 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Defending men's solo world champion Christopher Bak (Cincinnati, Ohio/University of Cincinnati/Next Level Rowing) defeated Canada's Aubrey Oldham to win his Last 16 race to move on to the quarterfinals, while Christine Cavallo (Windermere, Fla./Stanford University/Next Level Rowing) knocked out Canada's Sarah Pidgen to advance to the quarterfinals, posting the fastest time in the Last 16.
Those three crews will race for medals tomorrow.
