Tight Racing Highlights Saturday’s Placement Finals at 2022 USRowing Youth National Championships


Saturday's racing featured the B and C finals in the U17, U16, and U15 categories, as well as the C and D finals in the youth boat classes, at the 2022 USRowing Youth National Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.

Presented by Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc., this year's event is the largest ever, featuring more than 3,500 high school and junior athletes from 210 programs.

In the B final of the men's u16 quadruple sculls with coxswain, the top three boats finished within one second of each other with TriStar Rowing getting the win to claim seventh place overall. TriStar trailed Detroit Boat Club and Community Rowing's B boat heading into the final 500 meters, but TriStar was able to track down both crews to earn a 0.7-second victory. TriStar finished with a time of 7:06.60, with Detroit taking second in a 7:07.33. CRI finished in a 7:07.54.

In the men's u17 single sculls, South Orlando Rowing Association's Samuel De La Espriella held off a late charge from Narragansett Boat Club's Griffin Haisman to earn the victory. De La Espriella finished with a time of 7:48.62 to take seventh overall. In what was a tight race the entire way down the course, Haisman moved from sixth to second in the final 500 meters, finishing just over a second behind De La Espriella. The third and fourth place scullers finished less than one second behind Haisman.

Blair Academy bested Brookline Academy by just over one second to win the women's u17 B final. The Blair boat sat in second place through the midway point of the race before moving into the lead in the third 500 meters. Blair crossed the finish in a 7:50.07. Brookline held off Pacific Rowing Club by 0.25 seconds to take second.

Just one second separated the top two finishers in the C final of the women's youth four with coxswain. Pocock Rowing Center held off a late charge by Brooks School to win the race and finish 13th overall. Pocock finished with a time of 7:26.50, with Brooks School clocking a 7:27.50.

Racing concludes on Sunday with the A finals (medal races) for all 33 boat classes, as well as the B finals for the youth boat classes.
