USRowing Announces National Boating Safety Partnership with U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

USRowing and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have launched a national boating safety partnership. This partnership reinforces USRowing’s commitment to safety and strengthens its leadership in promoting responsible boating nationwide.

This strategic partnership provides USRowing with direct access to the Auxiliary’s expert resources, training programs, and national safety guidance, all aimed at enhancing protocols for rowers, coaches, and clubs nationwide.

“Safety is at the core of who we are as a sport,” said Tom Rooks, BMCS, USCG (Ret.) Director of Safeguarding. “Whether on the water training or competing, our athletes must operate in shared and often unpredictable environments. This partnership elevates our safety culture and provides our members with the tools and knowledge to thrive under all conditions.”

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the uniformed civilian volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard, is a national leader in recreational boating safety. Its mission includes public education, community outreach, vessel safety checks, and promoting waterway safety across the U.S.

Through this new partnership, USRowing will work with the Auxiliary to:

  • Expand safety education and awareness within the rowing community.
  • Share risk management strategies and enhance compliance with key boating regulations.
  • Provide access to local flotillas and safety experts for support at events, clubs, and regattas.
  • Develop and distribute co-branded resources and outreach materials that support best practices on the water.

Rowing requires precision, discipline, and a deep respect for the water. With this collaboration, USRowing reinforces its responsibility to provide a safe and supportive environment for athletes at every level—from beginners to Olympians.

“This is more than just a recognition—it’s a commitment,” said Tom Rooks “By working alongside the Coast Guard Auxiliary, we are building a safer future for rowing and empowering our members with the confidence to navigate any challenge.”

New safety initiatives and shared outreach programs will begin rolling out this spring, with a national push planned during National Safe Boating Week, May 17–23, 2025.
