U.S. Wins Two Medals on Final Day of 2023 World Rowing Coastal Championships
The U.S. won gold in the men's double sculls and silver in the men's solo event, highlighting Sunday's racing at the 2023 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Barletta, Italy.
Next Level Rowing's Chris Bak and Kory Rogers brought home the gold medal in the men's double sculls. Bak and Rogers crossed the finish line in a 26:37.94, less than two seconds ahead of Dennis Gustavsson and Eskil Borgh of Sweden's Stockholm och Hoganas Roddforening. Luke Eward and Malachi Anderson finished 15th in a 29:01.89.
In the men's solo event, Bak brought home silver, reaching the finish line in a 27:50.71. Defending last year's title, Adrian Quiroga of Ireland's Wicklow Rowing Club once again won gold, clocking a 27:33.52. Great Britain's Charles Cousins finished in a 27:56.01 to win bronze.
Next Level Rowing's Kory Rogers and Christine Cavallo took fifth in the mixed double sculls, crossing the finish line in a 28:07.42. Last year's bronze medalist, Ireland's Monika Dukarska, won gold with new partner Ronan Byrne. France's Vincent Noirot and Edwige Alfred took silver, reaching the finish line in a 27:41.93.
In the men's quadruple sculls with coxswain, USA 2 took seventh, while USA 1 took 15th. The Next Level Rowing crew of Benjamin Booth, Thaddeus Babiec, Michael Herman, Justin Stevens, and Bennett Rossell reached the finish line in a 25:19.45. USA 1, featuring a lineup of John Huppi, Michael Mckay, Philip Hoyle, Alexander Delsordo, and Whitney Powell, finished in a 26:30.92.
In the women's quadruple sculls with coxswain, USA 1 and USA 2 took ninth and 13th, respectively. The Next Level Rowing crew of Cara Stawicki, Morgan Hummel, Julia Lonchar, Jillian Zieff, and Peter Choi crossed the finish line in a 28:42.46. USA 2 (Brooke Downes, Kelli Anne Van Der Moer, Louisa Kolman, Jeni Sorli, and Coral Kasden) reached the finish line in a 29:50.08. The Netherlands' Hollandia RC won gold in a 26:33.82.
Christine Cavallo finished ninth in the women's solo event, crossing the finish line in a 34:15.59. Ireland's Dukarska took first place with a 32:09.17, followed by Azerbaijan's Diana Dymchenko, defending silver medalist, with a 32:20.94.
In the women's double sculls, Sorli and Zieff took eighth, while Van Der Moer and Olivia Farrar took 15th. Sorli and Zieff crossed the finish line in a 31:15.31. Van Der Moer and Farrar reached the finish line in a 33:04.20. The Netherlands' Janneke Van Der Meulen and Karien Robbers won gold in a 28:35.36.
In the women's double sculls, Next Level Rowing's Kasden and Ilianna Romanzo finished seventh in the B final for a 25th-place finish overall. The tandem finished the course in a 22:32.21. Finland's Marika Laaksonen and Anni Keisanen won the B final in 20:25.56.
In the B final of the mixed double sculls, Next Level Rowing's Downes and Mason Nothaft, and Connor Sawyers and Alyssa Trebilcock, finished 10th and 14th, respectively. Downes and Nothaft finished the course in a 20:55.23 for a 28th-place finish overall. Sawyers and Trebilcock finished in a 21:34.59 for 32nd. New Zealand's Matthew Dunham and Jackie Kiddle won the B final in an 18:32.16.
