World Rowing Junior Championships Start Wednesday


The 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships get underway on Wednesday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and the U.S. will be sending a full squad of 14 boats to race at the Plovdiv Canoe and Rowing Centre.

Nearly 600 rowers from 43 nations will be competing in the five-day regatta, which runs from August 11-15. Racing will be contested in the men's and women's single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, pair, four, four with coxswain, and eight.

With COVID-19 forcing the cancellation of last year's event, the U.S. is coming off a two-medal performance in 2019 in Tokyo. Julietta Camahort and Mia Levy are the lone returnees from the that squad. Germany topped the medal stand in 2019. Click here for a complete 2021 U.S. roster.

The women's double sculls features the most entries with 23. The Netherlands won the event in 2019. The U.S. entry of Olivia Meskan and Ella Saunders, who row out of Y Quad Cities, won the U.S. trials in mid-June after winning gold in the quadruple sculls at the USRowing Youth National Regatta.

The men's quadruple sculls has the second most entries with 22, while both the men's and women's single sculls have 21 entries.

Racing is scheduled to get underway ay 9:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 11, with heats in six events. Thursday's schedule features the remaining heats, as well as repechages from Wednesday's events. Friday's racing features the remaining repechages and the C/D semifinals. Saturday's scheduled includes the A/B semifinals, as well as the C and D finals. The A and B finals are scheduled for Sunday. The draw for heat lane assignments will take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. local time.
