James Wright

Five-Under 19, 2017-2018; Under 23, 2019, 2022; Senior, 2026

Finished second in the eight at the 2022 World Rowing Under-23 Championships. Finished 17th in the single sculls at the 2019 World Rowing Under-23 Championships. Finished 10th in the quadruple sculls at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships. Finished seventh in the quadruple sculls at the 2017 World Rowing Junior Championships.

Won the under-19 event at the 2018 World Indoor Rowing Championships. Won the single sculls at the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships. Won the single sculls at the 2017 and 2018 Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship.

James majored in Mechanical Engineering. His honors include being named the 2019 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and earning Pac-12 men’s rowing postseason honors for the 2019 season, as determined by a polling of Conference coaches. In 2022, he was named an IRCA First Team All-American and received the Frederick Emmons Terman Engineering Scholastic Award, presented to the top 30 students (top 5%) of each year’s undergraduate senior class in the Stanford School of Engineering. He also received the 2022 Henry Ford II Scholar Award, presented to Stanford students with the highest total engineering GPA combination in the School of Engineering who are also pursuing an advanced degree.

James volunteered as a phone crisis counselor for Crisis Support Services of Alameda County and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. He enjoys photography, soccer, chess, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He was previously coached by Aaron Preetam.
