In Memory: Larry Gluckman

Legendary coach Larry Gluckman passed away on Tuesday in Burlington, Vt., due to complications from a stroke. He was 72.

Gluckman, who earned his bachelor's degree from Northeastern University and his master's degree in special education from Columbia University in 1971, was on the U.S. coaching staff for both the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, as well as several world championships. He began his coaching career at Columbia and coached the heavyweight crews at Princeton University from 1981-89 and Dartmouth College from 1989-91, amongst others, before taking a job with Concept2.

Gluckman returned to collegiate coaching at Trinity College in 2002, where he coached through 2009. A long-time coach at Craftsbury Outdoor Center, he started their Small Boat Training Center in 2009, which developed into the Green Racing Project. During that time, he took numerous athletes to U.S. National Team Trials and placed several crews on the under 23 and senior national teams. Most recently, he was coaching John Graves at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in February and in his preparations for the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta this coming May.

Gluckman began rowing at Northeastern University in 1964, winning most improved oarsman as a sophomore and most valuable oarsman as a junior. As senior captain, his crew finished fourth at both the Eastern Sprints and IRA regattas.

As a national team rower, he won a gold medal in the four at the 1967 Pan American Games and a bronze medal in the four at the 1967 European Championships. He competed in the men's eight at the 1973 European Championships, men's four with coxswain at the 1975 World Championships and was an alternate on the 1976 Olympic Team in Montreal.

Larry was a beloved coach and will be missed by the rowing community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all his current and former rowers.
