Last Chance to Qualify for Paris Starts Sunday in Lucerne

While 10 U.S. crews have already qualified for the upcoming 2024 Olympic or Paralympic Games, eight more boats will get their opportunity to secure spots for Paris at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic & Paralympic Qualification Regatta beginning this Sunday in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The men's single sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls, men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, and men's eight will be looking to earn their spots for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, each needing a top-two finish in Lucerne to qualify. The PR1 men's single sculls and PR2 mixed double sculls will be trying to earn spots in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The top two PR2 mixed doubles will qualify for Paris, while only the winning PR1 men's single will move on.

In the PR1 men's single sculls, Andrew Mangan (Buffalo, N.Y./Stanford University/Texas Rowing Center/West Side Rowing Club) will take on eight other scullers in Lucerne. Mangan finished 14th in the event at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. France's Alexis Sanchez finished ninth at last year's worlds and is the top 2023 finisher in the qualification field, while Brazil's Rene Campos Pereira finished 10th in Belgrade. Sanchez finished fourth in the event at the 2024 European Rowing Championships in late April.

In the PR2 mixed double sculls, Russell Gernaat (Grand Rapids, Mich./Lake Casitas Rowing Club) and Madison Eberhard (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius University/ West Side Rowing Club) will take on seven other crews. The duo finished 10th at last year's world championships. Israel's Saleh Shahin and Shahar Milfelder won the B final at last year's worlds, finishing seventh overall. France and Brazil finished eighth and ninth, respectively, last year, with both boats sporting lineup changes from those crews.

Ben Davison (Inverness, Fla./University of Washington/California Rowing Club) and Sorin Koszyk (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Cornell University/California Rowing Club) are part of a 14-boat field in the men's double sculls. The duo finished 13th at last year's world championships. Moldova's Ivan Corsunov and Chirill Visotchi-Sestacov finished 12th at last year's world championships, while Greece's Nikolaos Cholopoulos and Ioannis Kalandaridis finished sixth at this year's European championships.

In the men's single sculls, Jacob Plihal (Vashon Island, Wash./Northeastern University/Craftsbury Green Racing Project), who won a silver medal in the event at the 2023 Pan American Games, is one of 31 scullers entered in the race. Norway's Kjetil Borch, the defending Olympic silver medalist, is the most decorated sculler entered in the event. Italy's David Mumolo finished 11th overall at the 2023 World Championships and reached the medal stand at this year's first world cup race, while Great Britain's George Bourne reached the finals at the 2024 European Rowing Championships after finishing fourth at the first world cup race of the year.

In the lightweight men's double sculls, Sam Melvin (Huntington Beach, Calif./Columbia University/New York Athletic Club) and Cooper Tuckerman (Bozeman, Mont./Dartmouth College/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) are part of a 12-boat field in Lucerne. Racing an entirely different lineup, the U.S. finished 19th in the event at last year's world championships. Germany's Jonathan Rommelmann and Paul Leerkamp finished 10th in 2023, while Poland's Daniel Galeza and Jerzy Kowalski finished 11th. Rommelmann and Leerkamp reached the final at World Rowing Cup I in April, finishing sixth.

With only six boats entered in the event, the U.S. women's quadruple sculls crew of Lauren O'Connor (Belleville, Wis./University of Wisconsin/ARION), Teal Cohen (Dallas, Texas/ University of Washington/USRowing Training Center – Princeton), Emily Delleman (Davenport, Iowa/Stanford University/Craftsbury Green Racing Project), and Grace Joyce (Northfield, Ill./University of Wisconsin/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) will race against Canada, France, New Zealand, Poland, and Ukraine in Sunday's preliminary race for lanes. The U.S. finished 11th in the event at last year's world championships. Ukraine was eighth in Belgrade, with Canada finishing 10th. Ukraine finished second at the recent European championships, while France finished fourth.

In the men's quadruple sculls, Dominique Williams (Madison, Conn./University of Pennsylvania/Penn AC), Will Legenzowski (Vista, N.Y./Brown University/California Rowing Club), Liam Galloway (Ridgefield, Conn./Yale University/New York Athletic Club), and Kevin Cardno (Huntsville, Ala./University of Alabama, Huntsville/Texas Rowing Center) finished ninth at the 2023 World Rowing Championships. The U.S. is one of 10 crews entered in the event including Estonia, who finished eighth last year, as well as Norway, Australia, and Ukraine, who finished 10th-12th last year, respectively. Racing the same lineup as in 2023, Estonia cracked the final at the 2024 European Championships, taking sixth.

One of four entries in the event, the U.S. men's eight will take on Austria, Italy, and Canada in the preliminary race for lanes on Sunday. The crew includes coxswain Rielly Milne (Woodinville, Wash./University of Washington/California Rowing Club), Pieter Quinton (Portland, Ore./Harvard University/California Rowing Club), Evan Olson (Bothell, Wash./University of Washington/Seattle Scullers/Penn AC), Peter Chatain (Winnetka, Ill./Stanford University/California Rowing Club), Chris Carlson (Bedford, N.H./University of Washington/New York Athletic Club), Clark Dean (Sarasota, Fla./Harvard University/Boston Rowing Federation), Christian Tabash (Alexandria, Va./Harvard University/University of California, Berkeley/USRowing Training Center – Sarasota), Nick Rusher (West Bend, Wis./Yale University/California Rowing Club), and Henry Hollingsworth (Dover, Mass./Brown University/California Rowing Club).
