Nearly 1,300 Competitors Race at 2021 USRowing Indoor National Championships

While COVID-19 pushed the 2021 USRowing Indoor National Championships/C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships to go virtual, that didn't deter nearly 1,300 competitors from 286 clubs from strapping in their feet on Sunday to race for medals in the 70-plus events.

More than 550 junior rowers jumped on an erg to race in the under 19, under 17 and under 15 categories.

In the women's U19 race, Cambridge Boat Club's Lindsay O'Neil chased down Indianapolis Rowing Center's Paris Miller in the final 500 meters to earn the victory. Miller led through the 1,500-meter mark before O'Neil powered through in the final quarter of the race. O'Neil, who placed fourth at last year's event in Boston, finished with a personal-best time of 7:06.2, 2.8 seconds ahead of Miller. Port Rowing's Reilly Katz took home the bronze medal.

With the race being held virtually and athletes being able to compete from anywhere in the world, competitors from 29 countries raced today including Ukrainian Artem Zakharov of Burevisnyk Rowing Club, who won the U19 men's race in a 6:06.2. Zakharov finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Saugatuck Rowing Center's Samuel Kleiner. Burton Beach Rowing Club's Davis Kelly finished third, just 0.1 seconds behind Kleiner.

Phifer recently raced in the men's single sculls at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing, reaching the semifinals. Riverside Boat Club's Bill Tomlinson finished third.
