Nine Athletes Invited to USRowing Para Rowing Training Camp

USRowing has invited nine PR2 and PR3 athletes to a Para Rowing Training Camp ahead of the 2022 National Selection Regatta 1 and Senior/Para Speed Order in Sarasota, Fla.

The camp will start Wednesday, March 16, and run through Monday, March 21, with racing at the speed order slated for Tuesday, March 22. Winners of the PR3 men's and women's pair events at the speed order earn automatic invites to the PR3 mixed four with coxswain selection camp in June.

"This is the first training camp of the Paris 2024 cycle," said Ellen Minzner, USRowing Director of Para High Performance. "It is an opportunity to collect data and check our early season speed, so we can set targets accordingly for upcoming trials later this summer."

PR2 athletes attending the camp include Russell Gernaat, who raced in the PR2 mixed double sculls at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, and Jennifer Fitz-Roy, who rows out of Community Rowing, Inc.

PR3 athletes attending the camp include Dominic DeMaio, Alex Flynn, Molly Moore, Pearl Outlaw, Jaclyn Smith, Todd Vogt, and Andrew Wigren.

Smith is a seven-time national team member, having won a Paralympic silver medal in the PR3 (formerly legs, trunk, and arms) mixed four with coxswain in Rio in 2016. Smith has won two gold medals at the world championships in the PR3 women's pair including in 2019 with Moore. Wigren and Vogt raced together in the PR3 men's pair at the 2019 World Rowing Championships, while Outlaw is a two-time national team member and bronze medalist in the PR3 mixed double sculls.

With the PR3 mixed double sculls being added to the Paralympic program for Paris 2024, Vogt, Outlaw, Wigren, and Smith will get a chance to show off their early-season speed as they prepare for that new opportunity.

In addition to the experienced athletes in attendance, two under 19 athletes have been invited to the camp to advance their small boat skills in preparation for future opportunities -- Alex Flynn from St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass., and Dominic DeMaio, a recent graduate of Methuen High School in Methuen, Mass.

WinTech Para rowing singles and doubles will be provided by the Sarasota Adaptive Rowing Program, with PR3 hulls provided by Hudson via the USRowing Para Rowing Training Center - Boston. Oars will be provided courtesy of Concept2.
