Six Boats Accept Spots on 2022 Senior National Team Squad
Six crews have accepted their spots on the 2022 Senior National Team, USRowing announced on Thursday. The crews earned their spots on this year's squad by winning their events at the national selection regattas in the Spring and then finishing in the top six at World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland.
These crews now will represent the U.S. at the 2022 World Rowing Championships September 18-25 in Racice, Czech Republic. They join the PR3 four with coxswain, which was named yesterday, on this year's world championships' roster. The remainder of the boats will be selected by mid-August.
The lightweight women's double sculls tandem of Molly Reckford and Michelle Sechser, who finished fifth in the event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, finalized its spot on this year's team thanks to a gold-medal performance in Poznan.
The women's pair of Madeleine Wanamaker and Claire Collins, who rowed together in the women's four at last year's Olympics, took home the silver medal from Poznan to nail down their national team spots.
Men's single sculler Ben Davison, the men's pair of Justin Best and Michael Grady, and the women's double sculls of Kara Kohler and Sophia Vitas used bronze-medal performances in Poznan to earn their spots on this year's squad. Davison, Best, Grady, and Kohler all raced at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, while Vitas is a two-time national team member.
The lightweight men's double sculls duo of Jasper Liu and Zachary Heese finished fifth in Poznan to secure their spots on this year's team. The duo won the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing in the event last year before going on to compete at the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta.
With the six boats having accepted their national team berths, two boat classes – the women's single sculls and men's double sculls – now will be contested at the second set of 2022 World Championships Trials scheduled for August 8-10 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
