Time Trials Conclude in Under 23, Open Events at 2023 USRowing Summer National Championships


National Events Jul 15,2023 Time Trials Conclude in Under 23, Open Events at 2023 USRowing Summer National Championships Day three of the USRowing Summer National Championships brought a brief rain delay, time trials in 23 events, and three medals. Starting with the largest event of the day, Samuel Dowd of Riverside Boat Club came out on top of 27 boats competing in the men's U23 single sculls time trial. Dowd finished with a 6:55:333 four seconds ahead of second place James Schmidt of Bachelors Barge Club. Dowd was previously a member of the 2022 Under 19 National Team in the men's quadruple sculls and competed in 2022 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Varese, Italy. With only two entries, the women's U23 lightweight pair time trial was one of two finals events of the day. Representing Dallas United Crew, Inc. Elle Noonan and Estelle Stout took gold with a time of 7:55:129 over Davenport RC's Caitlin Boyle and Alexandra Zaneski who came in at 8:00:935. Davenport also took a gold in the only other final of the day with the men's U23 lightweight eight, who went uncontested with a time of 6:31:734. The women's U23 quadruple sculls is shaping up to be an interesting final tomorrow, with less than a second separating the fastest two boats in the time trial. Oklahoma City High Performance Center barely took first with a time of 6:33:117 with Y Quad Cities hot on their tail at 6:33:239. OKCHPC's quad was rowed by Brooke Ruszkiewicz, Lauren Coop, Emma Rees, Ruthie Lacy while Y Quads held Ella Saunders, Alexa Mueller, Elizabeth Weber, Delaney Evans. OKCHPC is bringing 8 boats to the finals tomorrow while Y Quad Cities is bringing 7. The women's U23 quadruple sculls final is scheduled for 8:40 tomorrow morning. Finishing with the open age group two national team athletes qualified for the men's open single sculls final tomorrow. Christopher Bak, a multi-time Beach Sprint National Team member, finished with a time of 6:38:662 and Luke Rein, a member of the 2023 Pan American Games team, who clocked a 6:57:593. Bak rowed for Next Level Rowing while Rein rowed for the College of Charleston Club. Bak has been on the beach sprint team since 2021 and recently medaled in several events at the 2022 COPA America Coastal Championships. Rein previously competed in the coastal mixed double sculls in 2021 and came in seventh in the men's double sculls at the 2023 Pan American Games Qualifier. For today's complete results, click here. Due to inclement weather earlier in the day, semifinals are canceled and the first seven boats in each time trial will advance to finals tomorrow.
