U.S. Crews Close Out World University Championships with Silver Medal

The U.S. closed out the World University Championships with a strong showing in the men’s single and double sculls and women’s four, highlighted by a silver-medal performance from Matthew Skubas and Cornel Ciocoi in the men’s double sculls. Levi Munster also came within striking distance of the podium in the men’s single, while the women’s four finished just five-hundredths of a second outside the medals.

In the men’s double sculls, Skubas and Ciocoi raced to silver in a time of 6:40.68. Canada established an early lead, with the Americans and Italian crew following closely behind. The U.S. continued to build throughout the race, pulling clear of Italy to secure second place.

Munster, who also competed in the U23 men’s single sculls at the World Championships earlier this summer, finished fourth in the men’s single sculls. Munster got off to a strong start, battling Italy through the first 1,000 meters before ultimately finishing just outside the medals. Spain’s Koxme Burutaran Olaizola won the event.

The U.S. women’s four fell just short of the podium, finishing fourth by just 0.05 seconds. The Americans took an early lead through the first 500 meters, but the third 500 proved decisive as the top four crews battled through the final strokes. Germany claimed gold in 6:57.29, with Italy edging the U.S. for bronze in the final sprint.

In the men’s four, the U.S. finished second in the B Final to place eighth overall, while Ethan Campbell and Finnley Young finished 10th overall in the men’s pair. Abigail Lauth and Katherine Myers took fifth in the B Final of the women’s pair, finishing 11th overall.

Kaylee Godwin and Reagan Rock also raced to a close finish in the women’s pair B Final, with little more than a second separating the Americans from second-place Australia. The duo finished ninth overall.

The U.S. men’s eight finished sixth in its final, with Italy taking the gold. The U.S. women’s eight also placed sixth in its final, while the Netherlands claimed the women’s eight title. Lauren Garrett finished 12th overall in the women’s single sculls.

The U.S. national team competes next at the 2026 World Rowing Championships beginning next week in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
