USRowing Announces Camp-Selected Boats for 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships
USRowing is pleased to announce the athletes who have been selected to represent the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy, in the six camp-selected boats -- the men's quadruple sculls, women's quadruple sculls, men's four with coxswain, women's four with coxswain, men's eight, and women's eight.
The regatta is the premier event for rowers under the age of 23 and offers a total of 22 events. The other 15 U.S. boats were selected at the 2022 USRowing Under 23 National Team Trials in Sarasota in June.
At the 2021 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Racice, Czech Republic, the U.S. won medals in seven events including gold in the women's eight, silver in the women's pair, women's four, and men's eight, and bronze in the lightweight women's pair, lightweight women's quadruple sculls, and men's four with coxswain.
In the camp-selected boats, eight rowers return to the U23 squad. On the men's side, Jacob Hudgins rowed in the silver-medal eight last year, while Erik Spinka was part of the bronze-medal four with coxswain. Will Legenzowski raced in the single sculls, Nathan Phelps was part of the quadruple sculls, and Cooper Tuckerman rowed in the lightweight quadruple sculls. On the women's side, Sophia Hahn returns from the gold medal eight, while Margaret Hedeman raced in the quadruple sculls and Elena Collier-Hezel raced in the four with coxswain.
The men's sweep camp was held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., under the direction of coaches Jesse Foglia and Patrick Lapage, while the men's sculling camp was held at the Conshohocken Rowing Center in Conshohocken, Pa., under the direction of coaches Craig Hoffman, James Konopka, Lyons Bradley, and Aaron Preetam.
Reilly Dampeer, Molly Hamrick, and Marc Oria oversaw the women's sculling camp at the Oklahoma City High Performance Center in Oklahoma City, while the women's sweep camp took place at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and was coached by Kevin Sauer, Asiya Mahmud, and Kelsie Chaudoin.
The 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships is set to take place July 25-30. A complete roster, including coaches and staff, will be announced later this week.
USRowing would like to thank Filippi Lido, the Official Boat Supplier for the U.S. Senior, Under 23, and Para-Rowing National Teams. Under the agreement, Filippi is providing USRowing a fleet of boats for international competitions including the World Rowing Cup regattas, World Rowing Under 23 Championships, World Rowing Championships, Olympic Games, and Paralympic Games, as well as a domestic training fleet for the USRowing Training Center.
