USRowing Fall Speed Order Scheduled for This Weekend
USRowing will be hosting its 2023 Fall Speed Order this weekend on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
More than 130 athletes are scheduled to race in the men's single sculls, women's single sculls, men's pair, women's pair, PR3 men's single sculls, PR3 women's single sculls, and PR2 women's single sculls. The Fall Speed Order serves as an opportunity for athletes to test their speed as they head into winter training ahead of selection for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Forty-eight scullers have entered the men's single sculls event including seven members of the 2023 World Championships' squad. New York Athletic Club's Eliot Putnam (Littleton, Mass./Cornell University) finished 19th in the single at the world championships in Belgrade, Serbia. USRowing Training Center – Princeton's Chris Carlson (Bedford, N.H./University of Washington) was part of the men's eight that finished sixth in Belgrade, while NYAC's Sam Melvin (Huntington Beach, Calif./Columbia University) finished seventh in the lightweight men's single sculls.
Thirty-five rowers are entered in the women's single sculls event. Like the men's event, seven members of the world championships' squad are scheduled to race including USTC-Princeton's Michelle Sechser (Folsom, Calif./University of Tulsa), who won silver in the lightweight women's double sculls in Belgrade, and Whitemarsh Boat Club's Sophia Luwis (McLean, Va./The College of William & Mary), who won bronze in the lightweight women's single sculls in Serbia and was named USRowing's Carie Graves Female Athlete of the Year last month.
Fourteen boats are entered in the women's pair including 10 boats with ties to USTC-Princeton. All eight rowers from this year's silver-medal winning women's eight are scheduled to race this weekend. The stern pair of Charlotte Buck (Nyack, N.Y./Columbia University) and Mary Mazzio-Manson (Wellesley, Mass./Yale University/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) will race together, as will the bow pair of Margaret Hedeman (Concord, Mass./Yale University) and Emily Froehlich (Fishers, Ind./University of Texas/Craftsbury Green Racing Project). Brooke Mooney (Keene Valley, N.Y./University of Washington) and Alina Hagstrom (Seattle, Wash./Oregon State University) will compete together, while Regina Salmons (Methuen, Mass./University of Pennsylvania) will race with Molly Bruggeman (Dayton, Ohio/University of Notre Dame) from the women's four and Jessica Thoennes (Highlands Ranch, Colo./University of Washington) will race with Kelsey Reelick (Brookfield, Conn./Princeton University), also from the four. Claire Collins (McLean, Va./Princeton University) and Madeleine Wanamaker (Neenah, Wis./University of Wisconsin), who won bronze in the pair at the 2022 World Rowing Championships and rounded out the four in 2023, are scheduled to race together this weekend as well.
Six men's pairs are scheduled to race on Lake Mercer. King's Crown Rowing Association's Nick Mead (Strafford, Pa./Princeton University/New York Athletic Club), who won silver in the men's four in Belgrade and was recently named USRowing's 2023 Male Athlete of the Year, will be racing with 10-time national team member Alex Karwoski (Moultonborough, N.H./Cornell University). Penn AC's Evan Olson (Bothell, Wash./University of Washington) and Jamie Copus (Winnetka, Ill./Oxford Brookes University) both raced at this year's world championships, with Olson finishing fifth in the pair and Copus racing in the lightweight men's quadruple sculls.
Four scullers have entered the PR3 women's single sculls including two-time Paralympian Dani Hansen (Patterson, Calif./University of Washington) and three-time national team member Pearl Outlaw (Charlottesville, Va./Ithaca College/Station L Rowing Club). Hansen won silver in the mixed four event at both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Outlaw last raced for the national team in 2022.
Three rowers are entered in the PR3 men's single sculls including Ben Washburne (Madison, Conn./Williams College). Washburne was part of the PR3 mixed four with coxswain that won silver in Belgrade. Cambridge Boat Club's Andrew Wigren (Providence, R.I./Hobart College), a three-time national team member, is also scheduled to race.
