USRowing Launches Currents, A New Program to Support National Team Athletes’ Competitive and Career Aspirations
USRowing is proud to announce Currents, an innovative program dedicated to supporting the career development and well-being of national team athletes at every stage of their journey—from athletes training for LA 2028 to post-competition career pursuits. This initiative ensures that athletes can access meaningful career resources and professional development, helping them thrive on and off the water.
USRowing is committed to helping national team athletes succeed by leveraging the rowing community’s expansive span of resources and connections to secure rewarding careers after dedicating years to rowing. Long-term commitment to the national team has played a significant role in success on the international stage, as seen by the gold medalist from the men’s four who all returned for a second Olympic cycle. Retaining athletes for multiple Olympic and Paralympic cycles requires a strong support system that allows them to build professional careers while aiming for success on the international stage.
“Supporting our Olympic and Paralympic athletes in finding meaningful careers during and after competition is essential to our vision,” said Josy Verdonkschot, USRowing's Chief High Performance Officer. “Long-term success relies on retaining talented athletes across multiple Olympic and Paralympic cycles, and this initiative helps remove barriers that could otherwise lead them away from competing at the highest level.”
One of Currents primary goals is to build a robust pipeline of networking and employment opportunities for two key groups:
- Athletes training for the national team: rowers who need flexible roles compatible with the demands of high performance training and international competition.
- Transitioning athletes ready to explore professional paths beyond rowing.
Team USA rowers are some of the most disciplined, determined, and collaborative individuals in sports and bring exceptional value and transferable skills to any workplace. With academic backgrounds from top institutions and years of experience with teamwork, performing under pressure, and leadership, they can enhance the performance and culture of any organization they join.
Partnering for Success: Join Us in Supporting Elite Rowers
USRowing invites forward-thinking companies and organizations to join Currents as employment partners. For athletes training for the national team, we aim to connect rowers with entry- to mid-level positions that align with their academic and professional goals. These roles will offer the flexibility to train full-time, attend Olympic training camps, and compete at the highest levels. For those retiring from elite competition, companies can help foster a smooth transition for athletes as they start the next chapter of their careers.
Beyond Employment: A Holistic Approach to Athlete Well-being
In addition to employment opportunities, Currents will provide access to vital resources, including:
- Mental Health Support
- Employment Guidance (networking, resume review, mock interviews, etc.)
- Mentorship Opportunities (industry advice, connection, and search strategies)
- Financial Literacy Education
- Personal Branding Strategies
