Women’s Pair to Be Selected This Weekend at Third 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing
With camp boat selection coming to a close this week, the final two spots on rowing's Olympic team in the women's pair will be up for grabs during the third round of 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Rowing scheduled for June 4-7 in West Windsor, N.J.
While final lineups won't be set until late tomorrow night after the close of entries, the field is slated to include several athletes looking for another trip to the Olympic Games.
At the 2019 World Rowing Championships, Olympic veterans Tracy Eisser (Fair Lawn, N.J./Cornell University) and Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis./University of Washington) qualified the boat for Tokyo for the U.S. with a fourth-place finish in Linz, Austria. The duo, which won a silver medal in the event at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, is back together for the trials, trying to stake claim to the spots they secured for Team USA nearly two years ago.
The boat is loaded with experience. Kalmoe, a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in the women's quadruple sculls, four-time world championships' medalist and 12-time national team member, is looking to make her fourth Olympic team, having already competed in Beijing, London and Rio. Eisser, a six-time national team member and four-time world championships' medalist, is looking to make her second Olympic team, having made the final in the women's quadruple sculls with Kalmoe in 2016.
Also slated to compete is three-time Olympic medalist Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y./Harvard University). Davies retired from international competition in 2012 after winning her second consecutive Olympic gold medal (third Olympic medal overall) in the eight. She returned to the team in 2019. In the seven years in between, Davies graduated from law school, worked as a judicial clerk on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Honolulu, won a Hawaii state championship in outrigger canoeing, earned her MBA, and worked for three years as a corporate lawyer in Boston. Davies will be rowing with Allyson Baker (North Royalton, Ohio/The Ohio State University), who is looking to make her first Olympic team.
Final entries are due tomorrow, with time trial racing slated to start on Friday. The remaining race schedule will be set after the close of entries. In total, the U.S. qualified nine Olympic boats for Tokyo. Three U.S. boats have already been selected. Athletes in the five camp-selected boats will be named later this week, with the entire roster being announced by early next week.
The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be held July 23-August 9, with rowing events slated to start on the morning of July 23. The Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 are scheduled to take place August 24-September 5, with para rowing events starting August 27.
