2024 World Rowing Championships Begin on Sunday


The U.S. will have 27 boats competing at the 2024 World Rowing Senior, Under 23, and Under 19 Championships August 18-25 in St. Catharines, Canada. Racing begins on Sunday, August 18, with U23 events and the lightweight men’s single sculls.  

The U.S. senior team will have boats racing in the men's and women's lightweight single sculls, lightweight quadruple sculls. The U19 crews will be competing in nine of the events including the men's and women’s quadruple sculls, four with coxswain, and eight, as well as the men's single sculls, double sculls, and pair. The U.S. will have crews competing in 15 of the U23 events including the men's and women's single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, four with coxswain, and eight, as well as the men’s pair, men's and women’s four, lightweight men’s single, and lightweight men’s pair. 

Of the 88 athletes on this year's roster, 45 have been on previous national teams. The roster is made up of athletes from 26 states. California leads the way with 21 athletes, followed by Pennsylvania with 13. 25 different universities are represented. The University of Pennsylvania has the most athletes with 10. 

At the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the U.S. won five medals including two golds, one silver, and two bronze medals. The U.S. ranked fifth in the medal table and finished in a tie for third in total medals. Eleven athletes return from the 2024 U23 squad. At the 2023 World Rowing Under 19 Championships held in Paris, France, the U.S. won one gold medal in the women’s four with coxswain.  

Sam Melvin returns to the lightweight men’s single event. He placed seventh at last year’s world championships. Audrey Boersen will race for the first time in the U.S. team in the lightweight women’s single despite making two prior teams. She was previously an alternate for the lightweight double in 2023 and a car accident excluded her from racing at the 2022 World Championships. Ian Richardson and Casey Howshall return to the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls. Jasper Liu and James Mccullough fill out the crew. Both athletes have raced at previous world championships in lightweight events. 

Sunday's racing includes Sam Melvin, in the lightweight single sculls, the U23 lightweight men’s single sculls, U23 men’s quadruple sculls, the U23 men’s and women’s single sculls, double sculls, four, and eight. The men’s double sculls features brothers John and James Patton from Yale University and Harvard University. Both were members of previous U19 and U23 national teams. 

In total, over 445 entries from 48 delegations are scheduled to compete. Germany has the most total entries with 34.
