Athlete Development Track Description

What do we think of when we hear the phrase "Athlete Development"? It's easy to assume that it simply coaches facilitating improvement and gaining speed -- But that's only part of it. If the past few years have taught us anything, it's that athletic improvement is more than just seeing splits go down. Athlete development and athlete wellness go hand in hand, and coaches must prioritize both to retain athletes, keep them healthy, and compete successfully on and off the water. Join USRowing as we examine how the rowing community can be leaders in serving athletes mentally and physically.

Keynote Speaker: Josy Verdonkschot - USRowing Chief of High Performance

Topic: Standards and Pathways for USRowing High Performance

Josy Verdonkshot took on the role of USRowing's Chief of High Performance in January of 2022. With over two decades of international coaching success in countries such as Italy and most recetly The Netherlands, Josy brings a new perspective to high performance development in the US. One year into his new role, Josy will outline where he sees American athlete development, how it compares to other nations, and where he believes the path to success lies for the future.

Other Session Topics: Appropriate training loads, mental wellness, small boat rowing, technique, stress management, rigging, physiology, etc

Program Management Track Description

Whether you're a small upstart looking to grow, or an established behemoth struggling to staff and assign priorities for all your programs, running an organization is hard work. In this track, USRowing brings best practices to its community on all aspects of program management – safety, member experience management, and effective communication. Special attention will be paid to any program's most important asset: the people and how they work together. There is no one size fits all formula but join us to gather some new ideas!

Keynote Speaker: Amanda Kraus - USRowing Chief Executive Officer

Topic: USRowing November 2020, Now and Beyond

What does it take to lead a national governing body into a new era of growth and sustainability. When USRowing CEO Amanda Kraus took the helm late, in 2020 what did she find to be the state of the organization? How did she prioritize her first steps? In this keynote address, Amanda will open RowCon2023 by recapping her early days with the organization, what drove her decisions in those first crucial months, where she sees the organization now and her vision for the future.

Other Session Topics: Staff development and management, boathouse culture, fundraising, marketing and communications, sustainability, safety, etc.

Hands-On Learning Workshops Description

In addition to regular sessions under these two umbrellas, USRowing will also offer Hands-on Learning sessions that will be workshop-based seminars giving attendees tangible skills to bring home with them. These workshops will be interspersed within the RowCon2023 programming and will last 90-120'.

Move Well To Row Well: The Proactive Athlete’s Approach To Speed and Injury Prevention

This workshop is a practical, applied version of the rowing movement discussion, “Move Well to Row Well: How cuing and compensations inhibit optimal rowing technique". Speed and longevity are in your hands. How? By moving well. This clinic is specifically designed to deliver strategies and practices that help you better understand, assess, and address every rower’s greatest area of concern. After all, to be long, strong, and stable in the boat, you must first be long, strong, and stable on land.

A Coxswains Guide to turning Practice Management into Raceday Speed

After the 2008 Olympics, coxswain Mary Whipple founded The 9th Seat to provide the resources coxswains and rowers need to succeed. Drawing on her success as a three-time Olympic medal winner on the U.S. Women's Rowing Team, Mary Whipple’s elite coxswain camps and clinics provide valuable information, training tips, feedback, and resources for up-and-coming coxswains.

In this session, Mary will teach coxswains the skills they need to become invaluable members of their teams and have seamless communication with their coaches. Participating coxswains will come away with tools to prevent decision paralysis, give purpose to their words, and nail the fundamentals of their craft.
