Final Push to Sarasota: Last Qualification Races Set the 2026 Youth Nationals Field

As the spring racing season reaches its peak, junior rowing programs across the country are turning their focus to the most important stretch of the year: qualification for the 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships . Over the last two weekends, thousands of athletes have competed at regional championships and marquee regattas, all chasing a coveted spot in Sarasota. These last two weekends will decide the final spots at the 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships.

Northwest

From May 15th to May 17th, the 2026 Northwest Youth Championships will be hosted in Vancouver, Washington, at Vancouver Lake. The event will be slightly bigger than last year, with 668 entries from 27 clubs, the most coming from Pocock Youth Rowing out of Seattle, Washington.

The biggest event will be the Men’s U17 double sculls with 24 entries. The men’s quadruple sculls should be an exciting race, as Oregon Rowing Unlimited earned silver at last year’s Youth National Championships in both the men’s quadruple sculls and the men’s 2V quadruple sculls, highlighting their strong depth in this event. Pocock will also be a team to watch, as they are returning three of the five from their national championship four with coxswain.

Northeast

On May 16th and 17th, the 2026 Northeast Youth Championships will take place at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. With 311 entries and 42 clubs represented, this is one of the smaller regional championships, yet it is one of the strongest regions with several top-three finishers from last year’s Youth National Championships hailing from the Northeast Region.

Greenwich Crew from Cos Cob, Connecticut, has the most entries with 33, closely followed by Community Rowing, Inc. with 30. The largest event will be the men’s youth coxed four with 18 entries. All eyes will be on the men’s youth single sculls as Simeon John from CRI and Oscar Spencer from Cambridge look to qualify again after finishing second and third at last year’s National Championship. Narragansett is one to watch after winning both the women’s youth coxed four and the women’s U17 coxed four at last year’s national championships. They will be on the hunt for another national title.

Midwest Junior Rowing Championships

The Midwest Junior Rowing Championships will also take place on May 16th and 17th. Hosted on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio, the top four finishers in each National Championship event will qualify to race in Sarasota. A total of 536 entries were made at this event by 40 clubs, with 39 of those entries being from St. Louis Rowing Club.

The men’s youth double should be a great race to watch as the top two finishers from last year’s National Championships, Y Quad Cities Rowing and Indianapolis Rowing Club, are both from the Midwest. Cincinnati Juniors Rowing Club is also a strong contender for national qualification after both their women’s and men’s eights finished in the A-Final of the 2025 Youth National Championship, and have strong results from this spring.

Stotesbury Cup

The final regatta of the weekend, the Stotesbury Cup, will be hosted on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 15th to May 16th. At this historical regatta, the top two crews from qualifying events will have the opportunity to race at the National Championship if they have designated this regatta as their qualification event.

NEIRA

New England Interscholastic Championships (NEIRA) is the final qualifying regatta, which takes place on May 23 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. The regatta competes in only two boat classes, and high school teams can qualify only in the varsity eight or varsity four with coxswain. The top two finishers receive bids to the national championships.  Teams to watch out for include Belmont Hill's men's four with coxswain, who won bronze last year, and Philips Exeter's women's eight, who finished seventh.

National Championships

The 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships will be held June 11-14 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, in partnership with Visit Sarasota County and the Nathan Benderson Park Conservancy. Athletes must qualify through one of 11 regional regattas held over the next four weekends.

A world-class venue, Nathan Benderson Park has hosted numerous elite rowing events, including the upcoming 2028 World Championships, the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, and the 2025 Youth National Championships, solidifying its reputation as the premier stage for American rowing.

The 2026 Youth Series and 2026 USRowing Youth National Championships will be streamed live on Overnght.
