Time Trials Conclude for Senior and Para World Rowing Championships Trials
Semifinals and five finals are set after Friday morning time trials took place at the 2025 USRowing Senior and Para World Rowing Championships Trials on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Athletes are racing for spots on the team that will represent the U.S. at the 2025 World Rowing Championships taking place September 21-28 in Shanghai, China.
The men’s single sculls had 16 entries, with Sam Melvin of the New York Athletic Club winning the morning time trial with a time of 6:44.64, followed by Olympian Jacob Plihal at 6:49.22 and Olympic bronze medalist Peter Chatain just .74 seconds behind at 6:49.96. Maddy Focht of the California Rowing Club topped the nine women’s single sculls competitors with a time of 7:30.64, narrowly beating Olympian Lauren O’Connor by just .44 seconds, and followed by Audrianna Boersen of ARION.
In the men’s pair, Jacob Hudgins and Nathan Phelps of the California Rowing Club won the time trial, posting a time of 6:24.59, followed by Kai Hoite and Olympian Evan Olson of the Green Racing Project in second. The women’s pair was a tight-fought race with only 1.12 seconds separating second and fifth place, with Olympian Jess Thoennes and Holly Drapp winning the time trial in 6:56.89, followed by Olympian Charlotte Buck and Kaitlyn Kynast of the Princeton Training Center. Mia Levy and Anna Jensen took third, just .55 seconds off second place.
Cooper Tuckerman of the Green Racing Project won the lightweight men’s single sculls in a time of 6:57.17 with Jamie Copus in second and Justin Schmidt of Conshohocken in third. Olympian Michelle Sechser posted a time of 7:32.53 in the lightweight women’s sculls.
Andrew Mangan of the Texas Rowing Center won the PR1 single sculls with a time of 10:07.79, followed by CRI’s Max Lyman.
Semifinal racing will commence on Saturday, August 2, with Finals racing on Sunday, August 3. The full schedule and complete results can be found here.
